Welcome to

Santa Cruz de los Cáñamos

Santa Cruz de los Cáñamos sits atop a plateau-like hill, in a landscape of gentle slopes, cultivated plains, and open areas overlooking the Origón River valley. A stroll through the village reveals an irregular layout, adapted to the terrain, with streets descending from the higher ground towards the surrounding agricultural areas. The name “Los Cáñamos” refers to the cultivation of hemp, which was once important in a plain near Cerro Santo.

Deep roots

History of Santa Cruz de los Cáñamos

Its historical origins are linked to the reorganization of the Campo de Montiel region after the Christian conquest and the presence of the Order of Santiago. In 16th-century documents, it appears as Santa Cruz de Montiel, still connected to Montiel, before becoming established as a town with its current name. The surrounding area also boasts sites of significant archaeological interest, such as Los Torrejones, with materials and evidence of ancient and medieval occupation along the Origón River, further reinforcing the historical significance of this small settlement in the southeastern part of the region.

The main heritage landmark is the Church of San Bartolomé, located near the cemetery. It was built in the 15th century on the site of the former Santa Cruz tower, reusing materials such as masonry, stone, and brick. Its current appearance largely reflects 18th-century renovations, with a single nave, a prominent apse, a portal completed in 1748, and a Cross of St. James at its keystone. A visit can be complemented by the Hermitage of Calvary, the Quixote Viewpoint, the old railway line south of the village, and the natural areas of Fontanillas, Fuente de la Zarza, and Fuente del Moro.
