About this place
The hermitage of the Virgin of La Vega is one of the most representative places in Torre de Juan Abad and one of those spaces where heritage, devotion and landscape are understood together.
Located in an open environment and linked to the valley, a visit allows you to leave the town center and approach a place closely linked to the identity of the town.
It is not just a religious building, but also a place of collective gathering, especially significant within the festive calendar of the municipality.
Its historical importance was notable from late medieval period. The consolidation of Torre de Juan Abad as a center of the Order of Santiago took place in the 13th and 14th centuries, and by the 15th century the hermitage of La Vega was among the most outstanding sanctuaries of the Order of Santiago, second only to that of Orcera.
At that time the building also functioned as Franciscan monastery with clergyman, By the end of the 15th century, it was already a place of great devotion, to which numerous faithful came in September for the feast of Saint Mary.
News from that time also indicates that the temple had two naves and a portal supported on pillars, which confirms the importance that this sanctuary achieved in local history.
The visit is especially attractive for those seeking a peaceful experience, combining religious heritage and rural landscape.
The path to the hermitage and its immediate surroundings allow for a better understanding of the historical relationship of Torre de Juan Abad with the valley and with the cultivated areas that made up a good part of its territory.
It is, therefore, a highly recommended stop to complete the visit to the municipality, along with the church of Our Lady of the Elms, the Casa de la Tercia or the places linked to Francisco de Quevedo.
