Palace of the Marquis of Melgarejo

C. Cervantes, 14, Villanueva de los Infantes

About this place

The Palace of the Marquis of Melgarejo is one of the most outstanding noble facades in Villanueva de los Infantes and is part of the group of stately residences that give personality to the historic center of the town.

Its presence within the urban fabric allows us to recognize the weight that certain lineages achieved in the monumental configuration of the town during the Modern Age, when civil architecture became a visible manifestation of social and family prestige.

The façade presents a strikingly powerful composition, organized into two sections with balconies and coats of arms on either side. One section belongs to the Baillo family and the other to the Melgarejo family, a detail that lends the building considerable heraldic interest and places it among the most significant examples of the stately architecture of Infante. Viewing it from the outside allows one to clearly appreciate the emphasis on symmetry, the prominence of the main balconies, and the ostentatious nature characteristic of this type of urban palace.

The interior of the building further reinforces this distinguished character. The main courtyard stands out, surrounded by porticoes supported by Ionic columns with corbels, and featuring a 19th-century imperial staircase made of marble, with a single starting point and two exits. These elements make the palace a particularly valuable example for understanding how the grand residences of the local nobility were organized, combining monumentality, domestic functionality, and a carefully curated presentation of the main spaces.
