About this place
The castle of Alcubillas, also known as Alcobela Castle, It is located on Castle Hill, in a high position from which it visually dominates the territory.
Although it is preserved in a ruined state today, it remains a key place to understand the defensive organization of the Campo de Montiel and the strategic value of these hills in the control of roads and passageways.
The site includes remains of walls, foundations, sections of wall, a cistern and vestiges of outer walls, elements that allow us to recognize the former nature of the fortress.
Furthermore, the presence of ceramic materials from the Iberian and medieval periods It indicates a prolonged occupation of the site and reinforces its archaeological interest.
The fortress was able to to be built in the 13th century, in relation to the reorganization of the territory after the Christian victory at Las Navas de Tolosa and the incorporation of these lands into the Order of Santiago.
For a long time, Alcobela depended on Montiel, until Alcubillas reached the village status in 1539.
