About this place
The Convent of San Agustín is one of the most representative buildings in Fuenllana and a key piece to understanding the importance that the town reached in the Modern Age thanks to the devotion to Saint Thomas of Villanova.
It is located in the northern part of the urban center, opening its facade to the square that today acts as a prelude to the complex.
According to tradition, the convent It was built on the saint's birthplace., which turned this place into a space of memory and special religious significance for the people.
The convent was founded in 1735 next to the old church of Santo Tomás de Villanueva, now defunct, and her works They ended in 1746.
The establishment of the Augustinian community reinforced the devotional prominence of Fuenllana within the region, to the point that in 1743 the worship of the old church of Santa Catalina was annexed to the convent.
Later, the disentailment of 1820 put end to convent life, and a large part of the building passed into the hands of the City Council, which still occupies a significant part of the property today.
Although its structure has been altered by renovations and new uses, the building retains elements of great interest.
The exterior is notable for its sober, two-story southern facade, featuring a lintel doorway, balconies, and reliefs of saints of the order.
Inside, the cloister stands out, organized into two sections and articulated with a classicist language of Tuscan order, considered in historical documentation as one of the most outstanding in the province.
The team was declared Declared a Site of Cultural Interest in 1991, which confirms its value within the heritage of Campo de Montiel.
