About this place
The Roman villa of Puente de la Olmilla is located within the municipality of Albaladejo, in a fertile plain that helps explain why this site was chosen for both residence and agricultural activity. It was not merely a country house, but a true rural production unit, dedicated to the use of the land and situated along ancient communication routes that connected the Meseta Central plateau, Andalusia, and the Mediterranean coast.
The site was first discovered in 1973 when high-quality Roman mosaics were unearthed during agricultural work. Subsequent excavations revealed a significant Late Imperial villa, with phases of occupation suggesting an earlier settlement from the High Imperial period. The villa featured a courtyard, peristyle, central corridor, and numerous rooms, forming a stately residence that combined domestic life, social events, and agricultural activities.
The main attraction of the complex is its polychrome mosaics, which decorated several rooms and display geometric and figurative motifs, including animal representations. Alongside these mosaics, the use of opus signinum, opus caementicium, and opus spicatum floors, the tiled roofs, the local stone walls, and the painted finishes suggest a meticulously maintained building, befitting a Romanized rural elite. The visit places us before one of the most significant examples of Roman history in the Campo de Montiel region and allows us to understand the importance of villas as centers of economic and social organization in the ancient landscape.
