Deep roots
The history of Castellar de Santiago is marked by its strategic value as a place of pass between Andalusia and the Meseta.
Its region has been inhabited since ancient times, favored by the mountainous terrain, the abundance of game and the presence of natural shelters.
After the Battle of Las Navas de Tolosa, the old tower or small castle from which it took its name ceased to fulfill its defensive function and the first settlement descended from the Castellón hill to the hill located between the Rambla and Fontona streams, known as the Mata de Mencaliz.
Integrated within the field of Order of Santiago, The core group grew throughout the century 15th and early 16th centuries, until it reaches its Independence from the Lordship of Torre de Juan Abad by means of a letter signed by Philip II on September 14, 1564.
