San Carlos del Valle es una de las localidades más singulares del Campo de Montiel por la fuerza de su imagen urbana y por el peso que ha tenido la devoción al Santísimo Cristo del Valle en su desarrollo histórico.
La visita al pueblo se entiende desde el primer momento como una experiencia monumental, articulada en torno a su gran plaza y a la iglesia del Cristo, dos elementos que le otorgan una personalidad muy marcada dentro de la comarca.
No es un núcleo que destaque por un crecimiento medieval complejo o por un caserío laberíntico, sino por una ordenación más clara y escenográfica, vinculada a su papel como lugar de culto, acogida de peregrinos y centro de reunión.
