Nuns' Washhouses

The Washhouses of the Nuns, in Fuenllana, constitute an interesting example of vernacular architecture linked to traditional use of water.

They are located near the birth of an emergence, a circumstance that explains both their location and their original functionality within the daily life of the municipality.

Beyond its utilitarian character, this space retains a remarkable heritage value, as it allows us to understand how the domestic tasks directly related to the water resources of the environment.

It is a simple, very understated structure, with a single-pitched roof and adapted to its practical function. On the south face it features a porticoed front supported by two wooden beams and a central pillar of ashlar blocks, a particularly significant element, since possibly It reuses materials from the Santa Catalina castle-church. This detail adds an extra layer of interest to the whole, by linking a space for everyday use with the reuse of building elements from one of the most important historical sites in Fuenllana.

Inside, they preserve four washing sinks carried out in limestone, which constitute the essential core of the whole.

These elements allow us to clearly recognize the original function of the building and reinforce its value as a testament to a way of life prior to the modernization of domestic water supply and sanitation systems.

A visit to this place not only brings the visitor closer to a humble, yet very representative architecture, but also allows one to appreciate the relationship between water, landscape, memory and heritage reuse in the historic center of Fuenllana.
