Church of Our Lady of the Assumption

Church Street, Puebla del Príncipe

About this place

The Church of Our Lady of the Assumption is located very close to the tower, in one of the areas that best concentrate the history of Puebla del Príncipe.

Its presence helps to understand the oldest part of the town, which is centered around the main buildings of power and worship.

It is one of the most representative heritage landmarks of the municipality, both for its architectural value and for its role in the religious and social life of the town.

The building can be stylistically placed between the 15th and early 16th centuries.

The exterior shows a solid structure of ashlar and masonry, reinforced with buttresses and with the tower attached to the base, whose image is also notable for the unique presence of battlements.

The church has a rectangular floor plan with a single nave covered with a barrel vault, while the main entrance, open to the south side, consists of a semicircular arch with imposts on rectangular plinths.

The bell tower, made of masonry with ashlar reinforcement at the corners, largely corresponds to a modern reconstruction.

Inside, it retains some of its most interesting features.

At the foot of the church is the choir, supported by two Doric pilasters decorated with low-relief rhombuses.

The oldest preserved part is the apse roof, with its star-shaped ribbed vaulting, in addition to the old chapel of the Virgin of Mairena, now the Chapel of the Blessed Sacrament, with a prominent Renaissance semicircular arch between fluted columns and Corinthian capitals.

On the opposite side opens another small chapel of classical design, much restored, where the tomb of Commander Gonzalo de la Tobilla, dated 1540, is located.

The visit allows one to fully appreciate the combination of exterior sobriety, late-Gothic survivals, and Renaissance contributions that define the character of the temple.
