Church of Christ

San Carlos del Valle

About this place

The Church of Christ is the great monumental landmark of San Carlos del Valle and the piece that best explains the identity of this town, known as the “town of Christ”.

Its silhouette dominates the square and makes the visit a very unique experience, because here architecture, devotion and urban planning form an inseparable whole.

The town cannot be understood without this temple, built on the site that It occupied an old hermitage of Saint Helena and linked from very early on to the veneration of the Holy Christ of the Valley, whose miraculous fame turned this enclave into an important center of pilgrimage.

The rise of this devotion made it necessary to build a new building and facilities capable of handling the arrival of worshippers and travelers.

The work was completed during the time of Philip V and it was one of the factors that drove population growth, later urbanized in an orderly fashion around its large square. Therefore, the church should not be seen only as an isolated temple, but as the nucleus from which the monumental complex of San Carlos del Valle is articulated, one of the most recognizable urban images of the Campo de Montiel.

The visit allows you to enjoy one of the most monumental and scenographic religious buildings in the region, designed to impress the pilgrim and preside over the public space.

Its presence, combined with the spaciousness of the square, creates a visually striking image that alone justifies a stop in the town. It is also a particularly attractive spot during the festivities of the Holy Christ of the Valley, when the building more intensely regains its devotional and festive character, although at any time of year it is an essential visit on any tour of San Carlos del Valle.
