About this place
Casa Grande is located on Calle del Arco, in the heart of Albaladejo's historic center, within an urban layout steeped in antiquity, characterized by sloping streets and the constant adaptation of architecture to the hilltop's contours. Its presence helps us understand that the town's character depends not only on its religious or defensive buildings, but also on its civil architecture, which shapes the historic core and reflects its evolution during the Modern Age.
The building is linked to the Order of Santiago and dates from the 16th and 17th centuries, a time when Albaladejo, already integrated into the Order, consolidated its town center and its main representative buildings. This connection with the Order gives it special historical interest, as it allows us to understand the Casa Grande not only as a prominent residence, but also as part of the network of power and the institutional structure that shaped the territory for centuries. In this sense, its heritage value lies in revealing a less visible, but highly significant, dimension of the town's past: that of civil architecture linked to administration, social prestige, and the configuration of the urban center.
From an architectural standpoint, the Casa Grande belongs to the late Renaissance period, evident in the classical style of its façade and in certain stonework details, most notably the carved medallions on the jambs. Added to this is the presence of an interior courtyard, a characteristic feature of stately and domestic architecture of the early modern period, which organized the building's life around a central space. Although today it is primarily viewed from the outside, it remains a key building for recognizing the quality of Albaladejo's traditional architecture and for complementing a tour of its historic center with a closer look at its civic buildings.
