Terrinches Gorge

Terrinches

About this place

The Terrinches Gorge, also known as the San Isidro Gorge, is one of the most unique natural areas in the municipality. Located about 3 km from the town center, it is best enjoyed on foot, following an easy trail that transitions from agricultural landscapes to a more rugged environment, with ravines, small streams, slopes, holm oak groves, and open areas offering sweeping views of the Campo de Montiel region. Entry is free and it is ideal for a peaceful nature walk.

The area's appeal extends beyond its landscape. The gorge forms part of one of the region's most prominent Geological Sites, with Paleozoic outcrops that clearly reveal the rock structure and geological evolution of this area. This diverse substrate also explains the variety of environments, vegetation, and fauna in the surrounding area, where Terrileza serves as a nature interpretation center, helping visitors to better understand the ecological richness of Terrinches.

The route can be extended with a visit to the Hermitage of San Isidro, located next to a recreational area with picnic tables and rest areas. From this vantage point, one gains a good understanding of the landscape and its connection to local traditions, especially the San Isidro pilgrimage. Further up the hill is the astronomical observatory, which takes advantage of the expansive horizon and low light pollution to make this an ideal spot for stargazing.
