Montesinos Cave

C-30 s/n, Ossa de Montiel

About this place

The Montesinos Cave opens onto the San Pedro estate, near Ossa de Montiel and very close to the Ruidera Lakes. The arrival at the site is itself part of the visit: paths, limestone formations, Mediterranean vegetation, and the proximity of water help to understand why this place became one of the most evocative landscapes in the La Mancha region.

This is a karst cave formed by the action of water on limestone. The entrance leads to the so-called Portal, formerly known as the Arrieros' Portal, and from there the cave widens into the Great Hall, the main area of the tour. Inside, the reddish limestone, clays, mineral flows, small stalactite formations, and a large bat colony stand out, reinforcing the natural value of the site.

Its universal fame stems from Cervantes, who set one of the most well-known and mysterious episodes of the second part of Don Quixote here. In addition to its literary value, it also boasts archaeological interest, with evidence of human presence dating back to prehistoric times. Visits must be guided, with appropriate footwear, and in accordance with the site's conservation guidelines.

Don Quixote's Trail through the Ruidera Lakes

In chapters XXII through XXIV of Part Two of Don Quixote, Cervantes sends Don Quixote of La Mancha, accompanied by Sancho Panza and a student who is a cousin of the skilled licentiate, to descend into the Cave of Montesinos. There, the knight dreams that he finds the characters of the Carolingian ballads enchanted by the wizard Merlin, and that the Lady Ruidera, her seven daughters, and two nieces have been transformed into the lagoons that bear her name, while her squire, Guadiana, has become a river.
