History of Quince

Membrilla is one of the towns with the greatest historical significance in the northern part of the region and a town whose evolution was marked by its relationship with the old castle of Tocón and with the Order of Santiago.

Its growth eventually displaced the prominence of other older medieval centers, until it consolidated itself as a highly dynamic town within the territory.

This historical trajectory explains why today it preserves a diverse heritage, in which important religious buildings, devotional spaces and ethnographic elements linked to water and traditional work coexist.

The population's roots lie in a process of reorganization of medieval settlement, favored by the development of the village that arose next to the Tocón castle.

With the end of the Middle Ages and the change in balance between the old fortified centers and the newly economically powerful towns, Membrilla gradually gained importance until it became one of the most prominent centers in this part of Campo de Montiel.

This evolution is complemented by a long historical continuity that extends to the Contemporary Age and helps to understand the current heritage richness of the town.

Routes that pass through Quince

Gothic Route – Milky Way

Medieval Christian tradition identified the Milky Way with the Camino de Santiago: that path of stars crossing the night sky was the silent guide leading pilgrims to Compostela. We propose a metaphorical journey through stars sculpted in stone by the ribbed vaults, whose ribs intertwine like constellations to support the firmament of the churches that the Order of Santiago erected throughout the Campo de Montiel. No other territory in Castilla-La Mancha...
