Welcome to

Villanueva de la Fuente

Villanueva de la Fuente is located in the southeasternmost part of Campo de Montiel, in a transit area between this region, the lands of Alcaraz and the upper Guadalquivir.

This location explains much of its historical importance, as it is a well-connected territory, rich in water resources, and with a remarkable continuity of settlement since antiquity. The surrounding landscape, marked by springs, rivers, and mountain ranges, also contributes a natural value that is an integral part of the town's identity.

Deep roots

History of Villanueva de la Fuente

The population has its roots in a very ancient past, linked to the environment of the Iberian-Roman city of Mentesa Oretana and other archaeological sites in the current urban area and its periphery.

During the Middle Ages, the place also had a notable strategic relevance, to the point of having a fortification and becoming the object of disputes between different Christian powers.

Over time, Villanueva de la Fuente consolidated its own personality, a blend of ancient heritage, medieval memory, and a close connection to the roads, water, and traditional uses of the land.

A visit to Villanueva de la Fuente allows you to enjoy a very complete destination, where historical heritage and landscape complement each other in a particularly attractive way.

The archaeological wealth of sites such as Mentesa Oretana or the Alley of Air the Church of Our Lady of Peace, the the hermitage of the Desamparados, the source of the Villanueva river and the group of mills and fulling mills linked to its course.

All of this makes the town a very suitable place to explore at a leisurely pace, combining urban walks with routes through its most significant natural and archaeological spaces.
