Roman road

Alhambra

About this place

The Roman road of Alhambra is one of those elements that allows us to understand the Campo de Montiel region as a territory historically structured by roads. More than an isolated monument, it is a linear work of engineering linked to the movement of people, goods, and information, and its significance lies precisely in its capacity to explain the landscape as a space of connection. In Alhambra, moreover, its interpretation takes on special meaning because the town occupied a prominent place within the ancient road network, in relation to the city of Laminium and at an important crossroads.

From a historical perspective, the road is mentioned in the Antonine Itinerary as the route between Laminium and Toledo. The area around Alhambra has traditionally been considered one of the key points for understanding this Roman corridor, and this reinforces the importance of the site within the ancient history of the region. It is not, therefore, simply an ancient road, but an infrastructure designed to organize the territory and ensure stable traffic flow, whose influence continued to shape later routes.

The most interesting section is preserved north of Alhambra, where the road was carved directly into the sandstone. This detail gives it a very distinctive character, because here the Roman work is evident in its direct contact with the rock. Curbs that guide the flow of traffic and drainage channels designed to evacuate rainwater are visible, features that demonstrate a planned, functional, and durable construction. Architecturally, its interest lies not in its monumentality, but in the technical precision with which it resolves traffic and drainage in a specific natural environment. Walking along this section allows one to clearly see how Rome transformed the terrain to make it passable and how that intervention became fixed in the landscape.
