About this place
The public washhouses of Alhambra are part of the municipality's ethnographic heritage and offer a glimpse into a very everyday dimension of local history: the relationship between water, domestic work, and community life. In contrast to grand monuments, these spaces allow us to understand how daily life was organized before running water became widespread in homes, when washing clothes was a collective task and, at the same time, a time for neighbors to come together.
The building was constructed in the 1940s and reflects a functional architectural style, designed to address a basic need with simple and effective solutions. It features a rectangular floor plan, central pillars, a fireplace, and separate living spaces. Natural light was achieved through large windows facing east and west, with segmental arches that lend the structure a sober yet easily recognizable appearance within the context of mid-20th-century rural public architecture.
The visit allows you to observe details that explain how the washhouse functioned. Outside, the well that supplied water to the central basin is preserved, as well as remnants of the lead pipe that carried the water to the washing area. These elements transform the building into a small lesson in traditional domestic engineering: water collection, conveyance, use, and disposal. Its value lies not only in the structure itself, but also in the social memory it preserves, especially linked to the work of women and the daily social life of the village.
