About this place
The Hermitage of San Sebastián is located in the El Santo neighborhood and is considered the oldest surviving church in La Solana. Its exact date is uncertain, although it is generally placed between the 14th and 15th centuries. It was declared a National Historic-Artistic Monument in 1982, a recognition based on the uniqueness of its architecture and, above all, the preservation of significant Mudéjar elements. As part of a tour of the town, it serves as an essential stop for understanding the religious and architectural origins of La Solana.
The building features an early Gothic style, simple and restrained. Its floor plan is rectangular, with a single nave and a square chapel attached to the east end, on the Epistle side. The nave is covered by a gabled roof, while the side chapel has a hipped roof, both covered with curved tiles. The construction combines rubble masonry with ashlar reinforcements at the corners and openings, reinforcing the impression of a modest building, but one clearly intended to last.
The greatest artistic value lies in its wooden roofs. The nave retains a Mudéjar-style roof with tie beams and rafters, crafted from carved pine, while the Epistle Chapel features a particularly elaborate roof structure, decorated with polychrome marquetry, mother-of-pearl inlays, and a dark ebony background. This roof is chronologically linked to the Mudéjar roof structure of the main hall of the old Town Hall, thus connecting the hermitage to one of the most interesting periods in the historical architecture of La Solana.
