Main Square of La Solana

The sunny side

About this place

The Plaza Mayor is the main urban space in La Solana and one of the best places to begin a visit to the town. Its current layout dates back to the expansion of the old square during the 16th century, when the town's growth spurred the creation of a larger, more representative public space suitable for municipal life. Since 1978, it has been recognized as a Provincial Historical Monument, reflecting its value within the urban architecture of La Mancha.

The complex has two clearly distinct areas. On the eastern side, the lintelled porches and the old Town Hall are preserved, a building attributed in 1530 to the master builders Luis de Béjar and Cristóbal Díaz. On the west and north sides, built in the 19th century, there are two stories with irregularly spaced openings above arcades with semicircular arches. Behind this section is the archway on Doña Ángela Street, with a lowered barrel vault and lunette decoration on the intrados, which connected the new construction to the edge of the original square.

The square should be understood as a space that synthesizes civil architecture, public life, and religious monumentality. The Church of Santa Catalina dominates one of its sides and lends the ensemble the visual force of a temple begun in 1420 and completed in 1524, incorporating Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque elements. Its portals, the 18th-century bell tower, and the clock tower complete a highly recognizable urban landscape, in which the square retains its traditional function as a meeting place, a venue for celebrations, and a heritage landmark of La Solana.
