About this place
The Hermitage of Santo Cristo del Consuelo is located at the southern edge of Torrenueva, overlooking the agricultural landscape that surrounds the town. It is one of the most beloved devotional sites for the residents of Torrenueva and, together with the Church of Santiago el Mayor and the other hermitages, completes the religious route of the municipality.
Devotion to Christ appears to have been consolidated before the middle of the 18th century, with documented supplications and processions before 1740. The construction of the hermitage took place in the second half of that century and was completed in 1795, when the worship of the Holy Christ had already become a stable reference for the town.
The building exemplifies a vernacular architectural style of considerable interest. It features a nave with a transept, a north-facing apse, and two portals, one facing west and the other south. The octagonal dome, topped by a brick lantern and spire, is a prominent exterior feature. Inside, the painted Christ on the wall is particularly significant, an ancient image essential for understanding the devotional origins of the church.
