Mine Source

Carrizosa

About this place

The Fuente de la Mina (Mine Fountain) is one of Carrizosa's most interesting ethnographic features, linked to the traditional management of water and the town's daily life. It is not just a fountain, but an old public water supply point that also served as a drinking trough for animals and as a source of irrigation for the orchards located in the lower part of the surrounding area.

Its name comes from the water collection system that fed it: underground channels designed to drain and collect groundwater and carry it to the fountain. This type of infrastructure helps us understand the importance of traditional hydraulic knowledge in the villages of Campo de Montiel, where water was an essential resource for domestic life, livestock, and agriculture.

The visit reveals a simple space, yet one imbued with a strong historical and functional significance. Although it has suffered inappropriate alterations, resulting in the loss of some of the original stone and the use of foreign materials, it remains a valuable site for interpreting the history of water in Carrizosa. Its interest lies precisely in this interpretation: how a fountain, a basin, and an underground conduit organized community uses and connected the town center with the nearby orchards.
