The hermitage of San Antón

The hermitage of San Antón is located within the group of religious sites in Villahermosa linked to popular religiosity and the traditional practices of the municipality. Its location, on the outskirts of the town in the direction of Ossa de Montiel, follows a common pattern for this type of construction, associated with roads and transitional areas between the town and the agricultural land.

From an architectural standpoint, it is a small, simple building, constructed of masonry and organized around a two-story roofed structure. This typology corresponds to the typical rural hermitages of the Campo de Montiel region, where functionality and community use take precedence over monumentality. Inside, the image of Saint Anthony, patron saint of animals, is preserved, which determines both its symbolic function and its role within the festive calendar.

The hermitage takes center stage during the feast of Saint Anthony, when Mass, a procession, and the traditional bonfire are celebrated, accompanied by the participation of local residents and the town band. In this context, the building transcends its architectural dimension to become a space for social interaction and the continuation of local traditions. It also forms part of a network of hermitages that structure the devotional landscape of Villahermosa, along with other sites such as Saint Augustine, Saint Isidore, and Saint Anne.
