About this place
The Laguna del Rey is one of Ruidera's main landmarks and one of the most convenient starting points for visiting the Lagunas de Ruidera Natural Park. Its proximity to the town center makes it very accessible for visitors, with open views of the water, walking areas, and direct access to some of the town's most representative historical sites.
It forms part of the system of fifteen lagoons in the Upper Guadiana, a stepped network where water flows between tufa barriers, small waterfalls, and riparian zones. The Laguna del Rey (King's Lagoon) perfectly showcases the characteristic Ruidera landscape: clear waters, marsh vegetation, banks used for walking, and an environment that combines nature, geology, and tourism. From its surroundings, visitors can access viewpoints, hiking trails, and areas dedicated to active tourism.
The lagoon also holds significant historical importance. The Cañada Real de los Serranos or Conquense, used by transhumant flocks, passed along its shores. These flocks traditionally drank in an area of the Laguna del Rey before continuing south. In medieval times, the passage by the lagoon also had strategic value, linked to control of the road and the surrounding area where an old tower with a farmhouse would later be located. A visit can be complemented with the Casa del Rey (King's House), the Powder Factory, the Mirador del Hundimiento (Sinkhole Viewpoint), and the Mirador de las Lagunas (Lagoons Viewpoint).
