About this place
The Mirador del Hundimiento (Sinkhole Viewpoint) is located at one of the most striking spots in the Lagunas de Ruidera Natural Park, next to the section where the water plunges steeply and forms a waterfall. The viewpoint offers a close-up view of a landscape very different from the tranquil shores of the lagoons: here, the water appears more visually powerful, framed by walls, riparian vegetation, and tufa formations.
The name of the place is linked to a specific historical event. On January 20, 1545, a massive flash flood in the Upper Guadiana Valley eroded part of the natural terraces, creating a deep ravine. Since then, the Hundimiento waterfall has become one of Ruidera's most iconic landscape features, described in modern times for its spectacular nature and the dramatic effect of the water cascading down the steep slope.
The visit is comfortable and brief, ideal for including in a route around Laguna del Rey and the town of Ruidera. The viewpoint is equipped for visitors, protected by wooden railings and information panels, making it a good interpretive stop within the park. From here, it becomes clear how water, limestone, and the topography have shaped a unique landscape, where geology and the tourist experience are intertwined.
