House of the Commandery

C. Empedrada, 2, La Solana

About this place

The Casa de la Encomienda preserves the memory of the Order of Santiago's presence in La Solana and its role within the territorial organization of the Campo de Montiel region. Its name recalls the former Encomienda of La Solana, an administrative and economic unit from which assets, income, and rights linked to the Order were managed. The building offers a glimpse into a civil architecture associated with the power of the Order of Santiago, but also with the agricultural and storage activities that sustained the town's economy.

The building follows the traditional model of a Manchegan manor house, structured around an entrance hall and an interior courtyard as its central distribution point. The colonnaded courtyard, organized on two levels, stands out within this space, featuring balconies and wooden balustrades on the upper floor. Its design is reminiscent of old open-air theaters due to the wrap-around arrangement of its galleries, although its function was linked to domestic, administrative, and agricultural uses. Elements of significant ethnographic value are preserved in the courtyard, such as the wellhead and the trough used for watering horses.

The complex also maintains a historical interpretation linked to the urban landscape of La Solana. The presence of the original Santiago tower reinforces its connection to the Order and makes the building a key piece for understanding how seigniorial power materialized in civil architecture. Its interest lies not only in its monumentality but also in the sum of functional spaces: entrance hall, courtyard, galleries, well, basin, and work areas, which help to imagine the daily and economic life of a house linked to the administration of the encomienda (a type of military commandery).
