Hermitage of Humilladero

C. Cam. Altar of the Virgin, 14, La Solana

About this place

The Humilladero Hermitage is located on Don Rodrigo Street and is one of the most renowned devotional sites in La Solana. Its importance is linked to the Virgin of Peñarroya, patron saint shared with Argamasilla de Alba, whose confraternity has one of its main headquarters here. It is a modestly sized building, integrated into the urban fabric, that retains the character of a traditional chapel connected to the old roads and the rituals of the image's arrival and departure.

Its origin is subject to various interpretations. One tradition places its construction in the mid-18th century, while other studies link it to an earlier wayside shrine, perhaps from the 16th century, initially dedicated to Saint John the Evangelist. This evolution would explain both its name and its historical function: a place for stopping, prayer, and contemplation before fully becoming a Marian hermitage. The current dedication likely solidified with the development of devotion to Our Lady of Peñarroya.

Architecturally, it follows a simple model of an urban hermitage, with a sober composition and straightforward design. It presents a compact volume, a main façade without excessive decoration, and a prominent entrance that serves as a focal point for the complex. Its significance lies not in monumental architecture, but in the survival of a popular religious typology: a small chapel, linked to community devotion, processions, and the festive calendar. The Virgin Mary resides there only twice a year: upon her arrival, on the second Saturday of September, and upon her departure, on the Sunday after the feast of Saint Anthony.
