About this place
The monolith of Pedro I is located on the outskirts of Montiel, next to the road to Puebla del Príncipe and near the hill of San Polo. Its position offers a view of the landscape where the Castilian civil war culminated, with the castle of La Estrella as the main landmark and San Polo as a key point for understanding the medieval siege.
The monument commemorates the death of Pedro I of Castile, which occurred in March 1369 after the Battle of Montiel. Taking refuge in the Castle of La Estrella, the monarch attempted to negotiate a way out, but ended up in the camp of Henry of Trastámara. There, the confrontation between the two half-brothers took place, ending with the death of Pedro I and the beginning of the Trastámara dynasty in Castile.
The piece is simple and straightforward: a natural stone monolith, erected in 1974, with a commemorative inscription identifying the place and date of the event. Its value lies in the historical significance of the site. It is not merely a stopover, but a vantage point of remembrance: from here one can discern the relationship between the castle, the battlefield, the historic route, and San Polo Hill.
