Medieval village of Torres and Casa Godoy

Montiel

About this place

The medieval village of Torres is located about 5 km west of Montiel, in a gently rolling landscape of country lanes, hills, and areas formerly used for farming and livestock. A visit offers a glimpse into one of those depopulated places that help to understand the territorial history of the Campo de Montiel region beyond its current population centers.

Torres appears in records from 1243 within the domain of the Order of Santiago, and in the 16th century, it is listed as a village dependent on Montiel. The Topographical Reports describe a small settlement with pastureland, its own officials, a priest, a church, a hermitage dedicated to Saint Blaise, and a now-vanished fortress. Its population gradually declined over time until it was practically abandoned, preserving today only scattered remains of the old hamlet and its church.

Adjacent to this area is Casa Godoy, also known as Cortijo de Torres, an 18th-century rural manor house closely linked to the history of the Torres and El Toconar estates. Its presence provides a more complete understanding of the site: first as a medieval village, then as a working farm and a stately residence. It is best to approach the visit as an exterior tour, always respecting access points, property boundaries, and the surrounding environment.
