About this place
The Church of Saint Sebastian Martyr is located in the old town of Montiel, on a small natural rise overlooking part of the village. Its position within the town helps to understand the growth of the late medieval "new town," when the population gradually shifted its center of life from the fortified surroundings of La Estrella Castle to more open and accessible spaces.
The church was commissioned in 1440 by Infante Henry of Aragon, on the site of an old hermitage dedicated to Saint Sebastian. Since then, it has undergone various transformations, but it retains its significance as the main parish church of Montiel and one of the town's most important religious landmarks. Its late medieval origins are linked to the period when the town consolidated its urban layout outside the upper castle walls.
The visit reveals a building with late Gothic roots, although extensively renovated. The façade dates from the 18th century and is notable for its portal with columns on paneled plinths and a niche containing an image of Saint Sebastian, dated 1687. The interior features a single nave with a vaulted ceiling and six chapels. The choir area retains one of the oldest sections, with two columns and a stone access to the tower; the baptismal font is located beneath this space. Also noteworthy are the Neoclassical altarpiece and the 13th-century Romanesque carving of Our Lady of the Snows.
