Hermitage of the True Cross

The Vera Cruz chapel is located in the town center of Torrenueva, on Calle Real, very close to the town's historic heart. Its origins are linked to the Vera Cruz brotherhood, a devotion that eventually led to the creation of its own religious space. Although it does not appear to predate the 16th century, the chapel was already built by the 17th century and has since been associated with Passion and Penitential celebrations, especially Holy Week in Torrenueva.

The building reflects a simple, vernacular architectural style. The façade is constructed with various types of masonry and is topped with a small bell gable, a characteristic feature of the urban chapels of the Campo de Montiel region. It is not a monumental temple, but rather a small-scale devotional space, integrated into the street layout and associated with the everyday religious life of the town.

The visit should be approached from the outside, as the site is only open to the public from the facade. Its main current interest lies in its continued function within the Holy Week cycle, serving as a storage place for the processional floats. Therefore, rather than being considered an isolated monument, it should be understood as part of the religious landscape of Torrenueva, alongside the parish church of Santiago el Mayor, the hermitage of San Juan Bautista, the hermitage of San Antón, and the sanctuary of Nuestra Señora de la Cabeza.
