About this place
The Azuer hermitage is located on the road to Carrizosa, next to the river that shares its name, about five kilometers from Villahermosa. Its position is not that of an urban center, but rather a crossroads within the agricultural and riverine landscape of the area. The site serves as a devotional stop and resting place for pilgrims associated with the Virgin of La Carrasca, especially during the processions between Villahermosa and her sanctuary.
The building features a simple yet highly recognizable architecture. It is a small, whitewashed, quadrangular structure with a hipped roof covered in curved tiles. The main façade is organized around a large entrance arch, transforming the hermitage into a welcoming space for visitors to pause rather than a monumental, enclosed temple. Above the roof rises a small central finial with a bell, accompanied by simple decorative elements, which identifies the building within the landscape and reinforces its status as a religious landmark.
The visit is best understood by relating the hermitage to the traditional route of the Virgen de la Carrasca pilgrimage and the surrounding Azuer River area. It is not notable for its architectural complexity, but rather for its role in the collective memory of Villahermosa: a specific point on the path where devotion, pilgrimage, and landscape converge. Its tourist appeal lies precisely in this proximity, in the white image of the hermitage by the river, and in the possibility of including it in a trip to the sanctuary or to the nearby natural areas.
