Welcome to
Ruidera is one of the most unique places in Campo de Montiel, not only because of the beauty of its surroundings, but because the town itself is closely linked to water.
It is located between the King's Lagoon and the Morenilla Cave, in the northwestern sector of the region, within a landscape that is unusual in the La Mancha region, where the presence of waterfalls, vegetation and sheets of water completely transforms the image of the plateau.
Arriving in Ruidera means, therefore, encountering a community that lives between the town and the natural park, between the hamlet and one of the most recognizable spaces of the Upper Guadiana.

Deep roots
Its history is rooted in ancient times. Project documentation indicates occupation since prehistoric times in this area, favored by excellent living conditions, with evidence at Mesa del Almendral and in various locations along the Upper Guadiana.
Later there was a Roman presence, linked to a communication route that ran longitudinally through the lagoons, and in medieval times this space was integrated into the Christian reorganization of the territory after the conquest of Campo de Montiel.
Research carried out in the region and historical documentation also indicate the existence of a fortification that has now disappeared, still described in the 15th century as a fortified farmhouse with a tower and fence, which shows the strategic relevance that this place had in the articulation of the northeast of the Campo de Montiel.
In modern times Ruidera experienced a new period of growth, especially under Charles III, when it became a Royal Site and industries that took advantage of hydraulic power were promoted, including mills, fulling mills and the well-known gunpowder factories.
That relationship between nature, settlement and economic activity remains one of its defining characteristics today.
