Settler's House

Villahermosa

About this place

Casa Poblador, also known as the house of Don Ramón Poblador, is located at number 12 Calle D. Ramón Poblador, within the historic center of Villahermosa. It is a stately home dating from the 17th and 18th centuries, preserved as a private residence, which highlights the importance of civil architecture in the town during the Early Modern period. Its history is linked to various prominent local families, including the Lorente de Zarza family, and later to Ramón Poblador Guzmán, a physician, whose surname eventually gave its name to both the house and the street.

The façade features a horizontal composition in two sections, with rectangular openings and a central balcony. The main entrance is through a flat or lintelled arch of masonry, at the keystone of which appears a shield with the monogram of Jesus, formed by the letters IHS, above a Calatrava cross. The doors retain 18th-century wrought iron fittings, while the lower windows have grilles from the same period, also topped with Calatrava crosses. On the upper floor, the wrought iron balcony stands out, set above a lintelled and molded opening.

The interior, although not part of the public tour, preserves interesting features that help to understand the layout of these grand houses. Access is through a vestibule, from which a staircase with a wrought-iron railing ascends. The house was structured around a square courtyard, originally formed by four corridors supported by columns. Currently, a portico with three smooth-shafted columns remains, one of them original with an Ionic capital, while the upper floor has been significantly altered. The visit should begin from the exterior, focusing on the façade, the main entrance, the coat of arms, the ironwork, and the balcony.
