About this place
The Fountain of Emperor Charles V is located in the lower part of Almedina, at the foot of the hill on which the town is situated, in a space where water has played an essential role in the historical organization of the place.
Its location, next to the hillside and in relation to the surrounding orchards and cultivated areas, helps to understand how this extramural sector was part of the daily life of the town.
It is not just a supply point, but an enclave that perfectly encapsulates the close link between landscape, water resources and historical settlement.
It is a monumental fountain of great interest within the hydraulic heritage of Almedina.
The water comes from an underground spring and reaches a structure attached to the wall, from which it flows through three cast iron pipes towards stone basins that formerly served as watering troughs for animals and also as washing places.
This complex, in addition to its functional value, stands out for its architectural presence and for its role in a fertile landscape related to the Guadalén valley, whose very toponym has been linked to this historical source.
More than an isolated element, the fountain should be understood as part of a traditional water management system. It serves as a conduit for human consumption, livestock, washing, and the irrigation of the cultivated areas at the foot of the hill. Therefore, a visit allows one to appreciate not only a unique structure but also a historical way of inhabiting the land, where water, orchards, and pathways were inextricably linked. It is one of those places where monumental heritage and the everyday landscape still merge into a single reality.
