Hermitage of Los Remedios

C. Mayor, Almedina

About this place

The Hermitage of Los Remedios is located on Calle Mayor, within the urban center of Almedina, integrated into the traditional fabric of the town.

It is a modestly sized building, closely linked to the daily life of the town, which, as you wander through its streets, reveals itself as one of those structures that retain a strong sense of place and significance for the community. Its location, right in the town center, makes it easy to visit and allows it to blend seamlessly into a stroll through the historic district.

It was built in the century XVIII and responds to a language neoclassical. In origin was dedicated to Our Lady of Sorrows, although later it came under the patronage of Our Lady of Remedies.

Its history was particularly marked by the damage suffered by the parish church after the Lisbon earthquake, as for a time this hermitage assumed the parish functions of the town. This role explains its importance in the historical memory of Almedina and its special significance within the local religious heritage.

From an architectural point of view, it stands out for its plinth of large stone blocks, upon which they rise brick and masonry walls reinforced at the corners.

The cover is organized with a wooden door under a semicircular arch and a pediment inside which appears the coat of arms of the town.

The ensemble is finished with a wooden eave covered with Arabic tiles and a bell gable that clearly defines its silhouette.

Inside, it is worth noting the inscription preserved on the main arches, the memory of the choir organ paid for by the residents, and the Visigothic baptismal font, one of the most unique elements of the building.
