About this place

The Alhambra Archaeological Museum is a key stop for understanding the town's rich history and its role within the Campo de Montiel region. A visit here allows you to understand, in a convenient and accessible space, a territory occupied for millennia and linked to such important sites as ancient Laminium, the Laminium-Toletum road, the Iberian-Roman remains of the Plaza de España, the castle, and the Visigothic necropolis. It is, therefore, an excellent starting point for visitors to orient themselves before exploring the town and its archaeological surroundings.

The museum was inaugurated in December 2003 with the aim of collecting, preserving, and explaining artifacts from the various historical periods documented in the area. It occupies a room of approximately 180 square meters in the Community Center and organizes its narrative into two main sections: one dedicated to Prehistory, with artifacts from the Paleolithic and Bronze Ages, and the other focused on historical periods, from the Iberian-Roman and Roman eras to the Visigothic and medieval periods. The collection comprises more than 900 pieces, displayed in 14 showcases and supported by informative panels that facilitate a chronological understanding of the collection.

The visitor experience allows one to move from the objects themselves to the landscapes that produced them. Ceramics, building materials, everyday objects, and artifacts associated with different phases of settlement help to visualize the evolution of Alhambra from its earliest settlements to the Middle Ages. Among the collections linked to the Andalusian past, materials gathered from the area surrounding the castle also stand out, such as green and manganese ceramic fragments, which connect the museum to the archaeological interpretation of the hill and the ancient defensive system.
