About this place
The hermitage of the Virgin of the Martyrs is located about 3 km southeast of Montiel, along the Albaladejo road. Its location, on the slope of a hill and above the Prado path and the Segurilla River, makes it a destination closely linked to the landscape: from here, local devotion, the riverside woodland, and views of the surrounding countryside combine.
The devotion to Our Lady of the Martyrs, patron saint of Montiel, has been linked to the town's religious history since the Late Middle Ages, in a territory marked by the Order of Santiago and the border region. Before this devotion took hold, Montiel had other Marian figures, such as Our Lady of the Star, venerated in the castle, and Our Lady of the Snows, associated with the old church in Torres.
The current building maintains a simple and recognizable appearance within the vernacular architecture. It has a rectangular floor plan, a single nave, a gabled roof, and whitewashed walls. The entrance opens under a porch located to the west, and above it rises a small bell tower. After the destruction and repairs of the 20th century, the new hermitage was inaugurated in 2002, preserving its role as a place of pilgrimage, community gathering, and rest amidst nature.
