Welcome to
Almedina is one of those towns in the Campo de Montiel region that are best understood by exploring them slowly.
It sits atop a hill overlooking the surrounding area, an elevated position that clearly explains its historical importance and continuous settlement. The town center retains a layout adapted to the topography, with streets that climb and follow the slope, small squares, and a traditional character that still features whitewashed houses, simple facades, and some larger buildings, such as the town hall and several houses with coats of arms.

Deep roots
The history of Almedina is particularly rich. It is one of the few settlements in the province with continuous occupation from the Late Bronze Age to the present day, a legacy of its strategic location, the availability of water, and the fertility of its surroundings. In medieval times, it was conquered by the Order of Santiago in 1213 and soon became one of the oldest and most prominent commanderies in the Campo de Montiel region. During the later Middle Ages and the 16th century, it maintained considerable importance within the region, although it subsequently entered a period of demographic and urban decline that shaped its later development.

Renaissance Art Route
The Campo de Montiel region boasts one of the most remarkable collections of Renaissance architecture and visual arts in Castilla-La Mancha. Throughout the 16th century, the economic prosperity fostered by the Order of Santiago and a flourishing local nobility financed churches, Plateresque portals, Mannerist altarpieces, and stately homes that still stand as the most visible testament to the region's splendor. It was also in this landscape that Fernando Yáñez de Almedina, a direct disciple of Leonardo da Vinci, was born.
