Welcome to

Alhambra

Alhambra is one of the most unique towns in the Campo de Montiel region due to the historical depth it concentrates in a single location.

Located on a hill and marked by an irregular urban layout, conditioned by the orography and by the evolution of the settlement over the centuries, it still retains the image of a town where the landscape and history form a single reality.

Its commanding location affords sweeping views over the surrounding area, particularly noticeable from viewpoints such as Gorgotija, the Castle, and the Cueva la Cancana, which offer a panoramic vista of the Campo de Montiel region. Today, many of its buildings reflect traditional architecture, with interior courtyards and whitewashed facades, features that reinforce the traditional character of the complex.

Deep roots

History of Alhambra

The history of Alhambra has its roots in Antiquity and makes it one of the centers with the greatest heritage value in the region.

Its Roman past is present in the toga-clad figures, altars, and Latin inscriptions linked to the surroundings of the Church of San Bartolomé, as well as in the memory of ancient Laminium.

In addition, there is the Visigothic necropolis located on the hillside, with some two hundred documented graves, which confirms the importance of the place also in late antiquity.

After the Christian conquest, Alhambra experienced a period of splendor under the rule of the Order of Santiago, which promoted its repopulation and the restoration of the old citadel.

In the 14th century it reached about 4,000 inhabitants, although it later lost some of its power and influence.

Furthermore, the historical formation of Campo de Montiel cannot be understood without Alhambra, since it was one of the towns founded and developed within the framework of the expansion of the Order of Santiago after the conquest of the territory.

Route of the castles of the Order of Santiago

Following the Christian victory at Las Navas de Tolosa (1212), the Order of Santiago was tasked with repopulating and defending the Campo de Montiel region against Almohad incursions from the south. To this end, they established a defensive system of over thirty fortresses scattered throughout the area, comprised of watchtowers and large castles such as the Castle of La Estrella de Montiel and Montizón Castle in Villamanrique. This two-day route explores the most significant military sites, following the same arc...
