Welcome to

Montiel

Montiel is one of the most emblematic historic towns in the region and a place where the relationship between landscape, archaeology, and history is particularly palpable. The current town center lies at the foot of the hill crowned by the Castle of La Estrella, whose silhouette continues to dominate the surrounding area and define the town's visual identity. This monumental presence, combined with the topography and vastness of the surrounding landscape, makes a visit to Montiel a clear indication of the close connection between the town and its ancient fortress.

Deep roots

History of Montiel

The history of Montiel dates back to the Andalusian period, when the settlement was established as one of the leading centers of the region. After the Christian conquest of 1227, the Order of Santiago transformed the town into a vital element for the organization and defense of the region, to the point of giving its name to the Campo de Montiel itself and consolidating it as one of its main centers. From then on, the town walls, the Church of Our Lady of the Star, and the Santiago castle were developed, in a process that made Montiel one of the main centers of medieval power in this part of Castile. Added to this is a decisive episode in the history of the Iberian Peninsula, as in 1369, at the foot of the fortress, Pedro I of Castile was killed by Henry II of Trastámara.

Route of the castles of the Order of Santiago

Following the Christian victory at Las Navas de Tolosa (1212), the Order of Santiago was tasked with repopulating and defending the Campo de Montiel region against Almohad incursions from the south. To this end, they established a defensive system of over thirty fortresses scattered throughout the area, comprised of watchtowers and large castles such as the Castle of La Estrella de Montiel and Montizón Castle in Villamanrique. Baroque Art Route

During the 17th and 18th centuries, the Campo de Montiel region was one of the areas of greatest artistic ferment in Castilla-La Mancha. The consolidation of a prosperous local nobility linked to the Order of Santiago and the influence of the Counter-Reformation spurred the construction of sumptuous portals, altarpieces with Solomonic columns, soaring bell towers, convents, hospitals, and civic palaces that still grace the urban landscape of the region today. This route, which...
