Route description
One of the most evocative and unique routes in all of La Mancha. Following in the literary footsteps of Don Quixote in chapters XXII to XXIV of Part Two of Cervantes' immortal work, this route traverses the Lagunas de Ruidera Natural Park, linking four stops of exceptional interest: the stunning natural beauty of the lagoon system, the medieval charm of a castle of Muslim origin, and the most famous karst cave in world literature. Ideal for all ages and can be combined with water activities and hiking.
Stop 1. Ruidera and the Lagoons. The natural setting of the Cervantes legend.
The village of Ruidera rises between the King's Lagoon and the Morenilla Cave Lagoon, in the heart of the Natural Park. According to Cervantes's fiction, Lady Ruidera and her seven daughters and two nieces were enchanted by the wizard Merlin and transformed into the fifteen lagoons that now make up the park, while her squire Guadiana became the river of the same name. The lagoon complex stretches for 25 km, with emerald and turquoise waters connected by waterfalls and dams. Near the village, highlights include the Ruidera Sinkhole, the highest waterfall in the complex, accessible on foot from the cemetery; the King's Lagoon; and the King's House, an 18th-century building constructed by Juan de Villanueva for Charles III's son, Infante Don Gabriel. Water sports, hiking, and birdwatching complement the literary experience.
Stop 2. Visitor Centre of the Ruidera Lakes Natural Park
The Visitor Reception Center, located at the park entrance in the municipality of Ruidera, next to the N-430 highway and Laguna del Rey, is the gateway to one of the most beautiful wetlands on the Iberian Peninsula. The building houses a permanent exhibition entitled “Ruidera, Landscape and Water,” which explains the formation of the lagoon system, the barriers, the role of the aquifer, and the historical evolution of the region, with panels, aquariums, and models. It also features an audiovisual projection room, information on trails, swimming areas, fishing, and park regulations, as well as a botanical garden showcasing the most representative shrub and tree species of the area. Specialized staff provide visitors with information on all the park's resources. The center also houses information from the tourist offices of Ruidera and Ossa de Montiel.
Stop 3. Rochafrida Castle
A castle immortalized by medieval romances and by Cervantes. Rochafrida Castle is located 7 km from Ossa de Montiel, just minutes from the Cave of Montesinos, in the Natural Park. It is the setting for two of the oldest romances in Spanish literature: that of "Rosaflorida," the beautiful lady of the castle who fell in love with the nobleman Montesinos, and that of "Fontefrida," which gives its name to the spring at its entrance. Cervantes captured this romantic world in Don Quixote's dream within the Cave of Montesinos. Of Muslim origin, it was built by the Berber tribe Masmuda in the 12th century and passed into the hands of the Order of Santiago after the Battle of Las Navas de Tolosa in 1212. Its layout is an irregular polygon adapted to the terrain. Today, remains of a keep and part of the wall, more than 2 meters wide, are preserved. From the top, you can enjoy extraordinary panoramic views over the park. A guided tour combined with a visit to the Montesinos Cave is highly recommended. The 4km Rochafrida Castle trail starts from the San Pedro hermitage.
Stop 4. Montesinos Cave
The grand finale of the route: the most famous cave in world literature. Declared a Site of Cultural Interest in 2017, the Cave of Montesinos is located on the San Pedro estate within the municipality of Ossa de Montiel, inside the Natural Park, 7 km from the town. It is a karst cave formed by the dissolution of limestone, with a maximum depth of 45 meters, a maximum width of 59 meters, and a maximum depth of 18 meters, through which a small underground river flows. Cervantes set here the most famous enchantment in the history of literature: Don Quixote descends, bound with ropes, and falls into a deep sleep in which, according to him, he lives for three days, though for his companions it barely lasted half an hour. There he encounters Montesinos, Durandarte with his heart ripped out, Belerma, and the enchanted Dulcinea herself. Visits must be made with an authorized guide. The guides provide headlamps and helmets. Suitable footwear and comfortable clothing are recommended. The entrance is partially obstructed by large blocks of stone, but the interior can be traversed almost upright.

Route of the castles of the Order of Santiago
Following the Christian victory at Las Navas de Tolosa (1212), the Order of Santiago was tasked with repopulating and defending the Campo de Montiel region against Almohad incursions from the south. To this end, they established a defensive system of over thirty fortresses scattered throughout the area, comprised of watchtowers and large castles such as the Castle of La Estrella de Montiel and Montizón Castle in Villamanrique. This two-day route explores the most significant military sites, following the same arc...

Gothic Route – Milky Way
Medieval Christian tradition identified the Milky Way with the Camino de Santiago: that path of stars crossing the night sky was the silent guide leading pilgrims to Compostela. We propose a metaphorical journey through stars sculpted in stone by the ribbed vaults, whose ribs intertwine like constellations to support the firmament of the churches that the Order of Santiago erected throughout the Campo de Montiel. No other territory in Castilla-La Mancha...

Renaissance Art Route
The Campo de Montiel region boasts one of the most remarkable collections of Renaissance architecture and visual arts in Castilla-La Mancha. Throughout the 16th century, the economic prosperity fostered by the Order of Santiago and a flourishing local nobility financed churches, Plateresque portals, Mannerist altarpieces, and stately homes that still stand as the most visible testament to the region's splendor. It was also in this landscape that Fernando Yáñez de Almedina, a direct disciple of Leonardo da Vinci, was born.
