Welcome to

Villanueva de los Infantes

Villanueva de los Infantes is one of the most emblematic towns in the Campo de Montiel region and one of the historical centers that best express the rich heritage of the region.

Located in a central position within the territory, it consolidated itself as a town of great political, religious and administrative importance, becoming the main reference point for this part of La Mancha during the Modern Age.

Its urban layout, the quality of its buildings and the density of its heritage make it a fundamental destination for understanding the history, culture and identity of the Campo de Montiel.

Deep roots

History of Villanueva de los Infantes

Its origins are related to the former enclave of Jamila and with the subsequent relocation of the population to the place of La Moraleja, which would eventually become Villanueva de los Infantes.

In 1421 it obtained its own jurisdiction and began a period of growth that led it to surpass other historical centers in the region. This process culminated in the 16th century, when It was recognized as the capital of the Campo de Montiel and head of a large area dependent on the Order of Santiago.

Since then, the town has combined political, ecclesiastical and economic functions that explain the monumental nature of its houses and the presence of palaces, churches, convents and manor houses that still define its urban image today.

A visit to Villanueva de los Infantes allows you to explore one of the most valuable historical sites of the Renaissance and Baroque periods in La Mancha.

The Plaza Mayor, the church of San Andrés, the noble palaces, the old convents and the literary legacy of Francisco de Quevedo They make a stroll through its streets a particularly enriching experience.

In addition, there is its relationship with other enclaves in the surrounding area, such as the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Antigua or the Jamila archaeological site, which broaden the historical reading of the town beyond the urban center.

It is a place to explore slowly, paying attention both to the monumentality of its buildings and to the atmosphere of a historic city that has strongly preserved its personality.

Baroque Art Route

During the 17th and 18th centuries, the Campo de Montiel region was one of the areas of greatest artistic ferment in Castilla-La Mancha. The consolidation of a prosperous local nobility linked to the Order of Santiago and the influence of the Counter-Reformation spurred the construction of sumptuous portals, altarpieces with Solomonic columns, soaring bell towers, convents, hospitals, and civic palaces that still grace the urban landscape of the region today. This route, which...

Renaissance Art Route

The Campo de Montiel region boasts one of the most remarkable collections of Renaissance architecture and visual arts in Castilla-La Mancha. Throughout the 16th century, the economic prosperity fostered by the Order of Santiago and a flourishing local nobility financed churches, Plateresque portals, Mannerist altarpieces, and stately homes that still stand as the most visible testament to the region's splendor. It was also in this landscape that Fernando Yáñez de Almedina, a direct disciple of Leonardo da Vinci, was born.

Gothic Route – Milky Way

Medieval Christian tradition identified the Milky Way with the Camino de Santiago: that path of stars crossing the night sky was the silent guide leading pilgrims to Compostela. We propose a metaphorical journey through stars sculpted in stone by the ribbed vaults, whose ribs intertwine like constellations to support the firmament of the churches that the Order of Santiago erected throughout the Campo de Montiel. No other territory in Castilla-La Mancha...
